Firearms Instructor Practice Exam

When encountering a malfunction after performing the "tap, rack, ready" technique, the appropriate response is to follow a systematic procedure to ensure the firearm is operational again. The choice of "lock, drop, rack, insert, rack, ready" effectively addresses multiple types of failures, particularly in a scenario where a round may be stuck or a magazine issue is present.

This procedure begins with locking the slide open, providing a clear view of the chamber and allowing the shooter to assess the situation. Dropping the magazine removes any potential issues related to a faulty magazine, and racking the slide ensures any stuck round is cleared. The insertion of a new magazine follows, and racking the slide again chambers the next round. Finally, the "ready" part ensures the firearm is now ready for follow-up action.

This methodical approach maximizes the chances of resolving the malfunction efficiently, which is crucial in high-stress situations where time is of the essence. The clarity and specificity of this process help shooters mitigate the issue and prepare for further engagement if necessary.
